They promote Jerí's vacancy in Congress due to a secret meeting with a Chinese businessman

The stability of the interim government of José Enrique Jerí Oré hangs by a thread. This Monday, a group of parliamentarians, led by Segundo Montalvo (Perú Libre), formally presented a motion for a presidential vacancy due to moral incapacity.

The motion includes journalistic complaints about reserved and unrecorded meetings between the president and Chinese businessman Zhihua Yang. The use of official vehicles for meetings outside the official agenda in closed premises or allowing these same figures to enter the Palace despite having judicial restrictions, has promoted the measure.

The document, signed by legislators such as Ruth Luque, Sigrid Bazán and Flavio Cruz, maintains that the president has engaged in conduct that violates the dignity of the office and affects the transparency of the State. In total they have 14 signatures from parliamentarians who support the vacancy.

The motion not only calls for the president’s departure due to the president’s meeting with the Chinese businessman, but also for two other issues.

The emergency decree that allows the transfer of strategic assets (such as those of the Talara Refinery, Petroperú) to ProInversión is questioned. For the congressmen, this represents a “covert privatization that weakens energy sovereignty and puts million-dollar resources at risk without technical support.” On the other hand, the government’s inability to stop hitmen and extortion, especially in the transportation sector, and the lack of regulation of laws against citizen insecurity are criticized.

For his part, Congressman Edward Málaga Trillo said through social networks that it has been a “serious mistake” to have ignored the warning signs about Jerí’s suitability.

“This week I will seek signatures to censure him from the position of President of Congress, if he himself and his ministers do not resign first for the good of the country. His permanence puts the democratic transition at risk,” Málaga warned.

Given this scenario, constitutional lawyer Alejandro Rospigliosi explained in Exitosa Noticias that Parliament has two paths to remove Jerí. Although a vacancy due to moral incapacity requires a high vote (87 votes), the motion of censure against the Board of Directors is a much faster mechanism.

“What happened is very serious. There are elements of conviction that help put the puzzle together,” said Rospigliosi. The specialist recalled that, since Jerí is a president of Congress acting as head of State (after the departure of Dina Boluarte), a simple majority of those present in the Plenary Session is enough to censure him from his position on the Board of Directors, which would automatically cause his departure from the Government Palace and force a new constitutional succession.
