The Third Vice President of the Congress of the Republic, Alejandro Munantepresented a package of bills that require a constitutional reform with a view to the 2024 general elections. Among the regulations, it proposes to prevent the nomination of candidates with a sentence for treason, sedition, terrorism, drug trafficking and crimes against the national security and constitutional order.

Peru has experienced the consequences of electing authorities with fiscal files and serious accusations that have led us to a state of governmental degeneration.”said the congressman from popular renewal.
Bill 3911/2022 proposes to modify articles 34-A and 39-A of the Constitution to prevent candidates with a conviction in the first instance, as perpetrators or accomplices for the commission of an intentional crime, from applying for elected positions.

If approved, the proposed reform would also apply to the exercise of public service, through the appointment of positions of trust. Both impediments would apply even when the people have obtained a judicial resolution of rehabilitation for serving the sentence.
Likewise, bills 1142/2021 were presented to prohibit people with sentences for corruption crimes from holding leadership positions in political parties. Another initiative is 3910/2022 in order to establish that any restriction on the right to vote is carried out by law and not by regulations of administrative rank.
Project 3894/2022 establishes guidelines for the removal of members of the National Board of Justice and the election and removal of magistrates to the Constitutional Court and representative of the Ombudsman’s Office.
