The members of the Commission include directors of the provincial governments where prisons are located, the Permanent Specialized Commission for Sovereignty, Integration and Integral Security of the National Assembly, the Ecuadorian Church, the National Court of Justice and the State Attorney General’s Office.
At least three higher education institutions and an equal number of entities from civil society and the media, respectively, will also be part of the group.
The Secretariat for Human Rights also ruled on alleged cases of torture registered in the Center for the Deprivation of Liberty Zonal 8, known as the Litoral Penitentiary, in the city of Guayaquil.
In this regard, he urged the Ombudsman’s Office to activate mechanisms for the prevention of this and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
The implementation of protection mechanisms in this emerging case will allow increasing the exercise and respect of the rights of persons deprived of liberty, the Secretariat said.
