In the country there is a general condition of non-compliance with the rights of children
which translates into that “being a girl or a boy implies for the majority a high probability of being poor, dying from violent causes, living in territories that lack infrastructure and working to contribute to the family income or as a survival strategy, points out the Child Rights Index 2022: five years of non-compliance with rights.
The analysis prepared by researchers Mario Luis Fuentes and Saúl Arellano and published by the Coordination of Humanities University Program for Development Studies at UNAM, compiles data on what happened between 2016 and 2020, the first year of the pandemic.
Based on statistics on child poverty, violence against this sector, homicides, and lack of education, among others, he asserts that “collectively, Mexico has been incapable until now of making valid the rights recognized for children both in the Constitution and in the Law General of the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents.
From the measurement of multidimensional poverty itself, using the two series available to Coneval for the periods 2008-2018 and 2018-2020, what is found is that poverty in children and adolescents is much more accentuated than among the adult population.
In addition, for at least 12 years, permanently, more than half of those below the age of majority have been considered in circumstances of multidimensional poverty
. For example, in 2018, 50.3 percent of girls, boys, and adolescents were poor, and in 2020 the percentage rose, because 52.6 percent were in multidimensional poverty
.
In terms of violence, between 2016 and June 2021, the Inegi indicates that 7,752 children and adolescents from zero to 17 years old lost their lives due to injuries caused intentionally. Regarding sexual violence against children, according to statistics from the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (2022), in 2016 there were 35,102 investigation folders initiated (an average of 96.1 per day) and by 2020 the figure reached 54,342 ( an average of 148.8 per day)”.
