They open a new pavilion in La Joya in order to alleviate overcrowding

A new pavilion in the La Joya penitentiary center will come into operation in the coming weeks, in order to alleviate overcrowding and that meets international standards.

The Minister of Government, Janaina Tewaney Mencomo, and the Deputy Minister of Security, Ivor Pittí, toured the facilities of the new pavilion 6 of La Joya to finalize details of compliance with the minimum rules of confinement and security aspects based on respect for human rights. rights of persons deprived of liberty.

Tewaney emphasized that the important thing is that it will help reduce overcrowding and that the infrastructure meets international standards for the maintenance and treatment of persons deprived of liberty, since there are spaces for resocialization and it is inclusive, having cells to serve prisoners with disabilities.

The head of the Government highlighted the inter-institutional effort with the Ministry of Public Security (Minseg), both in the aspect of resocialization and at the same time, maintaining the security levels required in a prison.

For his part, Deputy Minister Pittí highlighted the permanent accompaniment work with the Mingob in the responsibility of the penitentiary centers, and highlighted the joint inspection to observe the security levels in the new pavilion.

The new structure has a capacity for 444 inmates distributed in 72 cells, it has study areas, a library, a guard room, monitoring through security cameras, a fire alarm, and two reserve tanks of 14,000 gallons each. for the fire system and another for drinking water with their respective pumps.

The structure also has two cells for use by people with disabilities, ventilation through extractors to maintain the temperature and windows with the dimensions established in international standards.

In addition, it has a wastewater treatment plant that does not require electricity, since the process is carried out using grass plants and whose lights are solar powered.

The work is soon to start operations and provide a space for the prison population, respecting human dignity and focused on resocialization.
