As a sign of goodwill towards the government and to avoid a prolonged recess at the negotiating table, this afternoon, indigenous leaders addressed the representatives of the Executive Branch to offer them lunch and continue meeting on the premises, but when they saw the menu the top brass chose not to eat.
One of the leaders of the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca addressed the members of the government’s Technical Commission and offered rice with prickly pear to the ministers, so that they would not go out to lunch and continue discussing the issue of the Basic Food Basket, since they are not in agreement. agreement with some of the 17 products presented by the government, including toilet paper, soap, Clorox, deodorant; but during her intervention, the moderator of the table requested respect for the already established methodology to be able to hold the recess.
The Arsopisbo of Panama, Monsignor José Domingo Ulloa, was the only one who agreed to eat what was offered and called for sanity, assuring that the conversations at the dialogue table continue.
“We were presented with a plate of food like any other that you eat and that I eat and that in this environment can create morbidity,” he said, emphasizing that it is important to respect the rules of the game.
For their part, the visibly upset indigenous leaders indicated that the people are requesting a basic basket of food, not cleaning and hygiene as the government is presenting. They added that the people are waiting for them to be summoned again to close the streets, since they are already tired.
