PUERTO PADRE, Cuba. — A Cuban-American over 60 years old was murdered in Puerto Padre, province of Las Tunaslate Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, in an incident that is being investigated as an alleged robbery and for which there are at least two suspects detained, as confirmed CubaNet on the ground.
The autopsy was performed at the «Ernesto» Provincial Hospital Che Guevara”, in the city of Las Tunas, where the body was transferred for the opinion of the forensic doctors. The cause of death is asphyxiation as a result of strangulation.
The motive for the crime is, presumably, robbery. However, until the time of publishing this note, there had been no public statements from the authorities regarding the case. The perpetrators of the murder are presumably two people, although the possible participation of other individuals as perpetrators or accomplices is not ruled out. Authorities are keeping two suspects in custody.
The victim was a retired Cuban-American, over 60 years old and with mobility difficulties. According to what he had told neighbors, he presented himself as a former construction contractor and had returned to Cuba permanently to settle in Puerto Padre.
The man lived alone in his home, where he received assistance only during daytime hours from a domestic worker.
The murdered Cuban-American had been a victim of continuous robberies. The thefts included cash and an electric tricycle used as rental transportation, driven by another person. Given the repetition of the events, he had requested the services of a blacksmith to reinforce and secure his home.
The man often complained about the lack of police action regarding the theft of his property and the safety of his person. Furthermore, he had already been subjected to coercion and threats before his death finally occurred.
Until now, no official details have been offered regarding the identity of the victim or the procedural status of the suspects, beyond their arrest. Nor has there been any public information about assets stolen in the context of the crime or other elements of the ongoing investigation.
