Groups march for works and against environmental damage.

Santiago. Representatives of environmental, social, popular, trade union and feminist organizations, together with community members from the sierra, marched through the streets of Santiago, rejecting the plans to build dams on the Bao, Jagua and Santiago Rodríguez rivers and rescue the Yaque del North.
A large part of the protesters arrived at different points in the Cibao region, mostly from the communities of San José de las Matas and Jánico, and through banners and slogans they asked President Luis Abinader to assume the campaign commitment to govern with the communities. , and listen to the heart of the mountain people.

The march started from Duarte Park, went up Del Sol Street, turned onto Duarte Street, went down Restoration Street and ended on the banks of the Yaque del Norte River.

In the manifesto read by the spokesmen Llaniris Espinal and Alfredo García they demand the dismissal of the Las Placetas dam, as well as the communities of Yamasá Monte Plata, stop Barrick Gold’s attempt to enter and pollute this land and endanger the rivers. of the area.

Espinal assured that the deterioration of the river basins, with the consent, by commission or omission of the authorities, violates the right. He expresses that a large part of the neighborhoods of Santiago receive the precious liquid once or twice a week. The priest Rogelio Cruz advocated the rescue of the rivers, while Baitoa and Licey al Medio demanded an aqueduct and a sewage system, respectively.

Meanwhile, Alfredo García, from the Collective of Popular Organizations, pointed out that with this list of unsatisfied demands, they make up the most heartfelt aspirations of the various sectors of the citizenry.

“You can not continue to be indifferent and sleep peacefully when life and progress go along the river,” said Garcia.
