The Network of Health Professionals for the Right to Decide carried out a “jacket” in front of the Courts of the City of Buenos Aires (CABA) to demand the annulment of the case and the dismissal of the doctor from Salta, Miranda Ruiz, who was charged last year for having performed a Legal Interruption of Pregnancy (ILE), to a 21-year-old woman, practice contemplated in the Argentine legislation.
“Ruiz is a general practitioner in Tartagal, Salta, and anti-rights groupsin complicity with the judicial power of the province, put together a case to try to discipline those who guarantee access to safe abortion,” stressed the organization that integrates the National Campaign for the Right to Legal, Safe and Free Abortion.
In the press conference that took place in Talcahuano and Tucumán after 5 pm, they highlighted that the “Abortion is clearly a problem of public health and social justice and it is our responsibility as health workers to take charge of guaranteeing it in the right conditions”.
They warned that these groups “in complicity with the judicial power of the province, put together a case to discipline those of us who guarantee access to safe abortion.”
“Guaranteeing rights is not a crime,” they maintained and warned that to “prevent compliance with Law 27,610, discipline and misinform, Miranda is charged.”
In dialogue with Télam, the general practitioner and member of the Network, Julieta Bazánpointed out that Ruiz “is now carrying out his activities normally” and that after what happened to him, “he began to receive more cases” which shows that the ILE “is a demand that is invisible in Salta.”
“We are awaiting the response to the request for annulment of the case,” he added.
Before the press, they observed that “This fact is a very serious attack not only against her, but also against the human rights and sexual rights of people and violates the laws in force.”
They recalled that the “fact for which she is accused is part of the care provided from the office where Miranda, together with the health team, treated a patient who required a legal interruption of pregnancy.”
“The Tartagal hospital endorses this practice and encourages its professionals to provide access to it,” they remarked, adding that they continue “fighting for the comprehensive sexual education law to be implemented in all educational institutions.”
The complaint to Miranda
The doctor was denounced in Tartagal after the practice of a legal interruption of pregnancy on August 24, at the Juan Domingo Perón hospital, to a 21-year-old girl, with 22 weeks and two days of gestational age.
Judge Mariscal Astigueta’s argument for denying the second request for dismissal (the first was denied because the accusation was being extended) would be the lack of burden of proof and that innocence is not proven.
Together with his lawyers, he filed an appeal, which is filed in a salteño appeal court“.
