Two tear gas devices were launched in areas of the Faculty of Humanities and Education of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) where the internal elections are being held.
According to versions released by journalists who were waiting their turn to vote, the explosions occurred between 3:40 and 4:00 pm, which produced the expansion of the smoke characteristic of tear gas.
The polling station witnesses safeguarded the electoral material and momentarily suspended the voting. Later, a representative of the Electoral Commission announced that the elections would resume at 5:00 pm this Friday.
“We are going to draw up a record, the important thing is that we go there together and set our tables (again),” said the spokesperson for the Electoral Commission to a group of witnesses who recorded said intervention.
In this Friday’s elections, 49 student centers and the federation that groups them will be chosen.
The representatives to the school councils, faculty councils and university council are also up for election.
