A man was murdered this Saturday night on a street in the Penarol neighborhoodreported Telemundo (channel 12) and confirmed police sources to The Observer.
The unidentified victim died at the scene. at Camino Edison and Calle Lamartine, where he was shot at least once. An ambulance arrived at the scene and confirmed the death.
Witnesses told police at the scene that they saw two men riding a motorcycle, and that one of them shot the victim.
It is the sixth homicide so far in May, in the neighborhood. In total there are 11 so far in 2022, one more than in all of 2021. In 2020 there were six and in 2019 there were 15.
An escalation of homicides occurred in the neighborhood between the early hours of Tuesday, May 10, and until the night of Wednesday, May 11. In those 48 hours, five homicides occurred (including the discovery of a charred and dismembered body on May 11 that the Ministry of the Interior classifies as “doubtful death”).
Given the string of cases, the Justice ordered eight raids in the area in the middle of the month, which ended with three detainees. One of them was condemned for storing drugs in a sale mouth. Firearms, bulletproof vests and drugs were seized. Then, three drug sales outlets were boarded up.

The first homicide in May was around 1 a.m. on May 10 when a 56-year-old man was shot to death. Two hours later the death of two men who were semi-calcined near the train tracks that pass through the neighborhood, near the corner of Camino Edison and Fulton.
That happened a few blocks from what happened on May 11, at dawn, when the police found a burned and dismembered body in a precarious structure on Luis Pasteur and Terencio streets, as reported by The Observer. On the night of that same day, the fifth homicideright after 8:00 p.m.
