Rutilio Escandón, governor of Chiapas, condemned the homicide and reported that authorities are already searching for those responsible for the crime.
“I condemn and regret the cowardly murder of Father Marcelo Pérez, we are going to collaborate with all the corresponding authorities so that his death does not go unpunished,” he said.
In September, Pérez led the peace march in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, along with other religious. He was accompanied by almost three thousand citizens.
Pérez is the first religious murdered during the administration of Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.
The march he led occurred in the middle of the dispute between the two large Mexican cartels in Chiapas territories.
In recent years, cells of the Sinaloa Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) have confronted each other in the region to gain areas for the transfer of drugs.
