The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) fined Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernández and initiated an investigation after the former Manchester United Delive publish videos on social networks that, according to football authorities, “promote sexist stereotypes.” In a joint statement issued Wednesday by the FMF and the main male and female leagues in Mexico (MX League and Women’s Liga), the authorities affirmed that Hernández’s comments violated their gender and diversity policies and constituted a form of media violence.
The FMF imposed an economic fine and issued a warning, and could impose more severe sanctions if Hernández recounts on this behavior. A few days ago, in the social network ‘Tiktok’, the former Real Madrid striker made statements that promote sexist stereotypes, considered media violence, and that threaten gender equality in sport, according to football entities.
The Gender and Diversity Commission announces the beginning of an investigation to prevent and sanction this behavior, determining imposing an economic sanction and a warning to Javier ‘El Chicharito’ Hernández, and indicating that this commission will take more severe measures in case of recidivism. Hernández, 37, published videos during the weekend in which he urged women to “be guided by a man” and accused them of “eradicating masculinity.” The outstanding athlete also said that society had become “hypersensitive” and questioned feminist perspectives about domestic roles.

The comments were widely criticized for being sexist and being outside the current social reality, which caused the condemnation of the fans and public figures, including President Claudia Sheinbaum. “He is a very good footballer, but in terms of his opinion about women, I think he still has a lot to learn, because women can be what we want,” Sheinbaum said at his daily press conference on Wednesday.

Hernández, top historical scorer of the Mexican National Team, returned to the club of his childhood, Las Chivas, in January 2024, after playing at the Galaxy and in several first -level European teams, such as Manchester United, West Ham United, Real Madrid and Sevilla.
