Eight sea turtles were found dead by park rangers on beaches in the Mariato district, in the province of Veraguas.
One of the findings occurred when park rangers from the Cerro Hoya National Park carried out routine monitoring and discovered six deceased sea turtles on El Cascajilloso beach and immediately notified the authorities of the Ministry of the Environment (MiAmbiente) who began the investigations.
Later, two other dead reptiles were found on the Mata Oscura beach, also in the Mariato district. The species are Lora or Golfina (Lepidochelys olivácea) and Verde or Prieta (Chelonia mydas)
The regional director of MiAmbiente, Julieta Fernández, said that according to the first investigations, the red tide could have been the cause of the deaths from torture and that they were in an advanced state of decomposition, so it is assumed that they should have died days ago. on the high seas and that the current dragged them towards the beach.
Despite this, specialist technicians and marine biologists from the Wildlife and Biodiversity Section, and the Coasts and Seas Section of the MiAMBIENTE Region in Veraguas, carry out further investigations to determine the specific cause of mortality of these species. .
