Next September 9 is the anniversary of the birth of Elena Quinteros. In 1966, at the age of 21, she obtained her teaching degree and began working at a school in Pando, Canelones.
Quinteros participated in 1975 in the founding congress of the People’s Victory Party (PVP), was arrested on June 26, 1976, and transferred to the “300 Carlos” torture center. Two days later, she had herself driven to the vicinity of the Venezuelan embassy in Montevideo, with the ruse of “delivering” a contact, but she actually tried to escape by entering the embassy gardens. In any case, the police and repressive forces arrested her and took her to the Infantry Battalion No. 13. The incident generated a diplomatic conflict between Uruguay and Venezuela.
Tribute
Within the framework of the 77th anniversary of her birth, and while the trial in Italy for her kidnapping and disappearance is taking place, social, cultural and political organizations from Uruguay organize the initiative called: “September month of homage to Elena Quinteros, teacher of the village”.
The goal is to vindicate Elena and all the disappeared detainees. “In this case, vindicate her as a woman, an educator, a participant in the socio-pedagogical missions, a union activist and a politician.”
