The Ministry of the Interior (SG) and the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) yesterday installed the Steering Committee that will follow up and evaluate the National Program to prevent and sanction torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or penalties, which was published last February.
The Undersecretary of Human Rights, Population and Migration of the SG, Arturo Medina, said The Government of Mexico maintains an indeclinable commitment to build a Mexico without torture and with full respect for human dignity
.
The session was appointed Yuriria Álvarez, special administrator to support the public policy programs of the Prosecutor’s Office Specialized in Human Rights, who will occupy the Technical Secretary of the Steering Committee.
Medina headed the first ordinary session of that body, together with the head of the Unit for the Defense of Human Rights, Froylán Enciso, and the General Director of Strategies for Human Rights, Claudia Galindo.
The Specialized Prosecutor for Human Rights, Sara Irene Herrerías, and José Antonio Pérez, of the FGR, as well as Alan García Campos, representing the United Nations High Commissioner on the subject, also attended.

In a statement, the SG said that this committee is a collegiate body responsible for verifying the advances in compliance with the objectives of the strategies and lines of action of the National Program, as well as issuing observations, recommendations and guidelines for its operation
. It was made up of 25 representatives of the three powers of the Union, Autonomous Organizations and Organized Civil Society.
Last February it was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation The program against torture and other cruel treatment, after the tenth collegiate court in administrative matters in Mexico City ordered the FGR to issue it, which was reflected in the general law to prevent, investigate and sanction torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading penalties, issued since 2017.
