Canadian technicians worked this morning assembling the heavy equipment that arrived in the country last night from Canada, to immediately begin their rescue operations for the two miners trapped nine days ago in a tunnel at the Cerro de Maimón mine, in Monseñor Nouel .
In offering the information, the director general of MiningRolando Muñoz Mejía said that the installation process could last between four and six hours.
After arriving at the Las Américas International Airport in a Boeing C-17 Globemaster military plane, the devices were transferred to the place where the workers are trapped. They got there at 4:00 in the morning.
In addition to these teams from Canada, in the rescue of the Dominican Gregorry Alexander Méndez and the Colombian Carlos Yéper Ospina, the Dominican Mining Corporation (Cormidon), owner of the mine, is working on several points, such as the installation of a gallery and the placement of a tunnel boring machine used in the expansion of the Santo Domingo Metro.
Both the authorities and their relatives have had the opportunity to talk with both workers, who have been calm and in good spirits.
On Thursday morning, President Luis Abinader visited the Cerro de Maimón mine, where, in addition to speaking with the two miners, he arranged to do whatever was necessary to get them out “safe and sound.”
Reception
At 8:00 on Sunday night, the plane from Canada arrived in the country, after being managed by President Abinader, through the Dominican ambassador to that nation, Michelle Cohen.
The crew and aircraft were received at the Las Américas terminal by Vice President Raquel Peña and the Minister of Energy and Mines, Antonio Almonte.
Peña, in charge of the Executive Branch, before the Head of State left the country, received the trained personnel sent by the Federal Government of Canada, who arrived with the equipment to rescue the two trapped miners.
“A few days ago, from the Dominican government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our Embassy in Ottawa, we requested the collaboration of the Canadian Government, given the vast experience of said country in the mining sector and the bonds of friendship and cooperation that unite to our peoples. Immediately, the Government of Canada responded affirmatively to our call, mobilizing resources”, indicated the vice president.

He explained that Luis Abinader, who returned to the country last night from Colombia where he participated in the inauguration of President Gustavo Petro, has been constantly monitoring the situation and coordinating the arrival of the teams that are expected to facilitate the extraction of the miners.
For his part, Minister Almonte indicated that the machinery that arrived in the country is capable of tunneling two meters per hour «which means that «we who have less than twenty meters to reach and extract the miners could achieve the objective in a very short time». Little time”.
