The lawyer Ezequiel Santagada, coordinator of the Legal Area of the Institute of Law and Environmental Economics (IDEA), stressed that the request of the candidate Bruno Defelippe, who requested to close a newspaper, is an atrocious one.
Lawyer Ezekiel Santagada spoke this Friday with Universo radio about the expressions of Bruno Defelippecandidate for the Senate and husband of Soledad Núñez, who calls for the closure of the newspaper La Nación.
“Is atrocious the manifested (by Bruno Defelippe). In a democracy, no means of communication can be prohibited. Freedom of expression is a fundamental pillar of any democratic system and disinformation or eventual disinformation is combated with more or better information, with quality information. The Supreme Court of the United States has said that well when it talks about the free market of ideas. What combats misinformation is precisely all the positions, that we can all access opinions and make a decision, ”he argued.
Although he said that he has different opinions from certain media outlets, he will not ask for their closures, since that would be run over articles 26 and 29 of the National Constitution.
“What can be unpleasant is the ban. I may not like the editorial line of a medium, I may go so far as to satirize that medium, but I cannot ask for a ban. More freedom of expression, even if we don’t like it, I think that this is a fundamental pillar of democracy and perhaps the most consolidated pillar of Paraguayan democracy and any attempt to undermine it, to weaken it, really seems appalling to me,” he said.
In his opinion, Defelippe should enter into a deep reflection, explain what they said, eventually correct themselves and apologize.
It’s news today: Soledad Núñez’s husband asks to ban the newspaper La Nación
Bruno Defelippe, candidate for senator and husband of the candidate for the Vice Presidency of the Republic, Soledad Núñez, issued some unfortunate comments that violate freedom of the press and expression. In an interview with ABC TV he said that the circulation of the newspaper La Nación should be “prohibited”, belonging to the Cartes Group, arguing that “trout surveys” are presented.
