They identify 30 streams that would endanger towns in the Junín region

Given the intensification of rains in the central highlands of our country, according to the study “Identification of Vulnerable Populations by Activation of Streams 2015-2016”In Junín, 30 creeks vulnerable to floods and mudslides have been targeted.

The targeted streams are: in Huancayo, in the Torre Torre area, as well as in the districts of El Tambo and Chilca; Tarma and La Merced, as well as 30 locations at risk; in Huancavelica, 11 streams in the districts of Huaytará, San Juan, Capillas, Huachos, Ascensión, Acoria and Acobambilla, 11 locations at risk; in Ayacucho, 13 streams in the districts of Santa Lucía, San Juan Bautista, Puño, Colca and Huancapi, 13 locations at risk.

Given the risk situation, the National Water Authority (ANA) made available to the authorities and the general population the Stream Activation Monitoring and Alert System (SAMAQ), which will keep the vulnerable population informed for 24 hours presence of floods, mudslides and other extreme weather phenomena.

In the event of a dangerous situation, sirens and alerts will be emitted through the radios to the Indeci-COER (Regional Emergency Operation Center) and regional-local governments, so that they have the necessary time to be evacuated to a safe area in order to put good collection of the physical integrity of people at high risk.

In the Mantaro basin, the director of the Mantaro Administrative Water Authority (AAA), Alberto Osorio, reported that there are four stations installed in the Huancavelica region, in the Acoria and Acobambilla district, and in the Ayacucho region, in the provinces of Huanta and Huamanga. He also announced that it will be gradually implemented in the Junín and Pasco regions.

The new mayors of the provincial and district municipalities can access this study to identify vulnerable populations due to the activation of streams, which have already been sent to regional and local governments in the Mantaro basin.

recommendations

The ANA, through this study, recommends to the regional and local authorities to carry out cleaning and clearing works in the channels of the streams vulnerable to landslides and floods, considering a width that allows the flow of water with drag material until it reaches the mouth, delimitation and monumentation of marginal strips in ravines.

It is also recommended to carry out projects for the relocation of populations settled in non-mitigable high-risk areas, reforestation of banks in the streams with suitable species to stabilize both banks, installation of transversal walls in the channels to cushion the energy of the flow and retain part of the dragging material, location of escape routes, places of refuge, temporary protection structures in places of greatest risk with longitudinal and transversal dikes, among other actions.
