“They grabbed him between two”: Police break the arm of a teenager from Holguín

Los rayos X muestran la fractura en el brazo izquierdo de Diego Armando Ochoa Ramírez

MIAMI, United States. – Dayanis Ramírez from Holguín reported on Facebook that his son, Diego Armando Ochoa Ramírez, 16 years old, suffered a broken arm this October 15, when he was attacked by agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) while they were playing sports on the field of the University of Medical Sciences of Holguín “Mariana Grajales”.

According to the mother’s testimony, Diego and other children and adolescents were playing soccer and basketball. However, a group of police officers arrived at the scene and ordered them to leave the area. “I had them detained as if they were criminals,” Ramírez wrote in his publication.

The situation escalated when Diego asked to leave, prompting the police to react violently. “When my son told them that he wanted to leave, they began to offend him and he responded that they had no reason to disrespect him,” said the mother.

The aggression intensified when two officers grabbed him forcefully. “They grabbed him between two, because they are so cowards that they need two to hold a child,” Ramírez denounced. While Diego asked them to let him go, warning that they were twisting his arm, the agents did not stop their action, which resulted in a fracture. “They were going to break his arm and that’s what happened,” the mother added.

Likewise, he noted that “not only did they break his arm but they also beat him.”

In statements offered to CubaNetRamírez explained that orthopedics are evaluating whether it will be necessary to perform a surgical intervention. “We still don’t know if they will have to operate. The orthopedists are going to follow up to see if there is no need for intervention,” he explained.

Meanwhile, Diego remains with a “precast” and is being monitored by doctors due to swelling and pain in his hand.

The complaint has already been filed with the authorities, according to the mother. “We know that there were four police officers and two of them were the ones who held him down,” said Ramírez, who is still looking for the names of the agents involved, among them a major from the Third Police Unit. Holguinwhom the mother directly accuses of being responsible for the fracture.

Another alarming aspect of the case was the attempted cover-up by the police. According to Ramírez’s testimony, when Diego’s father went to the police station looking for his son, the officers did not want to inform him about his whereabouts. “When the father arrived at the police, they did not want to tell him where he was because they had taken him in a patrol car to the pediatric hospital,” he reported.

Ramírez made it clear that he will not rest until those responsible face justice. “We are not going to rest until they pay,” he said in his publication. He also called on citizens to share their complaint.
