PUERTO PLATA.- The office of the Women’s Ministry in Puerto Platathrough its Legal Department has assisted around 180 women victims of gender violence in the last two years.
Francis Lizbeth Cruz, director of that unit in Puerto Plata, explained that immediately a woman requests help, either through the life line *212 or by going to the Gender Violence Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office, the legal department of the Ministry assists her with a lawyer.
She stressed that when President Luis Abinader assumed the Presidency of the Republic there were only two shelters, but currently the Ministry of Women has 16, that is, 14 new ones in two years.
Likewise, the person in charge of the Ministry of Women in Puerto Plata said that for the orphaned children of women victims of violence, the ministry has the Bon mujer program so that they can continue to support themselves.
Lisbeth Cruz indicated that so far this year in the province only five women have lost their lives, cases that have occurred in Villa Isabela, Altamira, San Felipe de Puerto Plata and two in Sosúa.

Although he did not reveal the number, Cruz also said that a good percentage of men go to the Unit for Victims of Violence of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Women, because they receive abuse from women who are violent.
