So far in the six-year term of President Claudia Sheinbaum, 43,082 reports of missing persons have been registered in the country, of which 25,706 (59.67 percent) were located, while 17,376 (40.33 percent) remain unknown, according to the database of the National Search Commission.

The total number of reports represented an increase of just 0.31 percent, compared to the previous 15 months, from July 1, 2023 to September 30, 2024.

According to the national registry of missing and unaccounted for persons, during Sheinbaum’s period, Mexico City has the most cases, with 2,639, followed by the state of Mexico, 2,375, and Sinaloa, 1,266.

Added to these entities are Guanajuato, 1,148; Baja California, 1,082; Michoacán, thousand 79; Sonora, 990; New León, 732; Chiapas, 524, and Tamaulipas, 507.

Of the 17,376 people in this condition, 74.30 percent are men and 25.67 are women, and in 0.03 percent the sex has not been determined.

As for ages, statistics show that the majority of men range from 15 to 40 years old, while women range from 10 to 24.

The months in which the most reports of absent people whose whereabouts are still unknown are recorded are September, with 1,303; August, 1,294; March, 1,264; May, 1,230, and January, 1,127.

The national registry accumulates 133,486 cases of disappearance from December 31, 1952 to date. The most affected entities are the state of Mexico, 14,759; Tamaulipas, 13 thousand 629; Jalisco, 13 thousand 323; Mexico City, 7,530; Michoacán, 7 thousand 387; Nuevo León, 7 thousand 209; Veracruz, 7 thousand 89; Sinaloa, 6,930; Sonora, 5,968, and Guanajuato, 5,495.

Of the total, 77.53 percent are men, 22.17 are women, and in 0.31 percent their sex is not determined.

Mexico surpassed the barrier of 100,000 unlocated people in May 2022, and since then the figure has increased by 33,486 cases. Although the phenomenon dates back to the 1950s, the trigger for the massive incidence recognized by the government was the so-called war on drug trafficking, launched in 2006.

The national registry of missing and unaccounted for persons began operations in 2019, since previously there was no instrument of this type, since there was only “information that contained multiple files with different structures, the data were inconsistent and there was a multiplicity of information and null records and without homologation of the information.”
