The body of the worker who remained missing in the chimney of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Plantwas finally found lifeless this Saturday night, according to official media.
Around 8:00 PM, the body of Lázaro Frank Montero Pita, a 57-year-old worker belonging to the Specialized Construction and Assembly Company, was found, the fourth of the four men who were buried by rubble yesterday as a result of the collapse of a wall inside the chimney.
In this way, the search for the last of the injured was completed, according to the local media. TV Yumuri. Alexis Bernardo Labrada, 47, whose body had been found this Friday, several hours after the accident, also lost his life in the event.
The other two workers trapped by the debris were able to be rescued alive on Friday and are recovering from the injuries sustained in the accident. The first of them has even been discharged from the hospital, and the second is still admitted to the Faustino Pérez Hospital in Matanzas with a pelvic fracture.
According to press reports, the men were working in the lower part of the chimney, in the area known as the ashtray, where they extracted soot and carried out other cleaning tasks when around 2:30 PM yesterday the partition collapsed, a wall seven meters high.
After the accident, firefighters and rescuers worked hard in the search for the workers, work that was recognized by the Matanzas authorities, according to TV Yumuri.
After the rescue of the first two and the subsequent discovery of the body of the third worker, efforts were concentrated on finding the last of the injured.
After working through the night and early morning, it was decided to withdraw the forces due to the danger of a new collapse caused by the large amount of soot that was concentrated against the wall of the chimney.
Specialized machinery that was used in the accident was brought from Havana Hotel Saratoga. It was used to open access points from the outside and facilitate entry to the area with the highest concentration of collapse debris.
After that, the rescuers returned to their work, until they finally found the lifeless body of the fourth injured worker.
At the time of the unfortunate event, the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric plant was stopped for maintenance work, in which more than a thousand workers participate.
