The Carabineros Special Police Operations Group (GOPE) removed an explosive device from a home in Viña del Mar, Valparaíso region.
The incident occurred after the tenant of the property gave notice to Carabineros after the presence of the device at her home. Police personnel stated that it was an old mortar in a state of “advanced oxidation”, so they had to remove it from the scene.
Captain Esteban Jiménez indicated that “it is not possible to determine if the element was active or not, since expert reports have to be made for that. It is also difficult to specify the origin and the date, since this element presents an advanced state of oxide “,
“The site of the event is protected, the people who live near the place where the artifact was found are cleared, and the GOPE is working to remove the element found,” he concluded.
