They find cell phones, knives and drugs in a mega operation in the Palmira prison

A surprise operation revealed how criminal networks continued to commit crimes from inside several prisons in the country.

Authorities seized more than 150 cell phones, sharp weapons and drugs during a national operation that seeks to stop extortion from prisons.

A surprise operation in the Palmira prison (Valle) allowed the discovery of sharp weapons, doses of narcotics and cell phoneswhich were used by criminal networks to coordinate extortion and other crimes from inside the prison.

The intervention was part of ‘the Megatoma’, an operation that was extended to other detention centers in the country. According to Gaula, The raids were also carried out in the prisons of Cómbita (Boyacá), Tramacúa (Cesar) and La Picota (Bogotá)managing to affect criminal structures that maintained constant communication with the outside to coordinate homicides, drug trafficking and extortion.

According to Major Elmer Rojas, commander of the Valle Police Gaula, in the midst of the raid on the Palmira prison, The neutralization of illicit communications and the seizure of elements used to maintain control of criminal activities were carried out.

“In total, the Police found 157 cell phones, 130 chargers, 20 SIM cards and 77 sharp weapons.in addition to more than 7,000 doses of cocaine hydrochloride and 3.5 kilograms of marijuana,” he said.

Likewise, the officer highlighted the importance of the operation by pointing out that, “With these activities we prevent the economic heritage of the people of Valle del Cauca from continuing to be affected. through extortion calls and criminal coordination from prisons.” Likewise, he reiterated the call to the community to report any extortion attempt to Line 165, available 24 hours a day.

The authorities confirmed that The police action impacted more than 700 people deprived of their liberty, many of them linked to the Common Organized Crime Group ‘Los 300’, responsible for coordinating extortion and the “false service” modality, a criminal practice that continues to affect merchants, transporters and citizens of Valle del Cauca.
