The disappearance of Laura Valentina Páez, a 9-year-old girl from Chiquinquirá, Boyacá, has shaken the community since the night of Thursday, January 16. The minor left her house to walk her dog, but did not return.

The last time she was seen, according to her brother, Diego Velandia, was at 6:25 pm that same night. “My sister went out to walk the dog so she could relieve herself, and when we checked the security cameras, we saw that she was in the place until 6:25 pm,” Diego commented in an interview with Caracol Radio.
The authorities quickly began the search, and thanks to security camera recordings, they managed to identify an individual who had had contact with the girl. The man, who would later be arrested, would have approached her and taken her away in his vehicle.

According to Noticias RCN, the man initially confessed that the girl was in the Minero River, in the municipality of San Pablo de Borbur, Boyacá, he later retracted his statement, which generated more uncertainty about Laura Valentina’s whereabouts. However, the search continued in the area indicated by the suspect.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, January 21, the search took a tragic turn when a group of soldiers from the Sucre Infantry Battalion No. 2 found a lifeless body in the Minero River, near Chiquinquirá. According to local media, the body, found in the sector known as ‘Otro Mundo’, three hours from the urban area of Pauna, Boyacá, is believed to belong to Laura Valentina. This discovery coincided with the first statement of the main suspect, who, after his capture, claimed to have thrown the body into the river.



The individual, identified as Daniel Josué Z., was not only linked for his confession about the location of the discovery, but also for his alleged sexual abuse of the minor. The authorities found the vehicle in which he apparently took her, located in a brass and paint shop.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, biological fluids and other elements were discovered in the car that are being analyzed by Forensic Medicine to confirm if they correspond to the minor’s DNA.
After the investigations, the prosecutor of the Boyacá Section charged Daniel Josué Z. with the crime of aggravated forced disappearance. The man was transferred to a prison, where he will serve a security measure while the investigations into this painful case continue.
