They estimate that 8.4 million hectares of soybean and corn have some degree of water deficit

Of the 23.6 million hectares occupied by these crops, 35.6% have some degree of lack of water that could affect yields.

The implanted surface with soybeans and corn that meets problems of water deficit reaches 8.4 million hectares, of which 77.4% correspond to lots planted with oilseeds and the remaining 22.6% with cornestimated the Buenos Aires Cereal Exchange (BCBA).

Thus, of the 23.6 million hectares occupied by these crops, 35.6% have some degree of lack of water that could affect yields.

Despite this percentage, the surface that has extreme drought conditions is around 888,000 hectares, while 7.5 million hectares are in a regular hydric state, which means that although their yield may be affected, new rains could stop their deterioration.

Of those 888,000 hectares, most correspond to soybeans, pointed out Esteban Copati, head of Agricultural Estimates of the institution.

The Buenos Aires Stock Exchange has already made cuts to the production estimate for both crops product of the lack of rain and the extreme heat wave that occurred in January.

Thus, it adjusted corn production downwards from 57 to 51 million tons, while soybean production was two million, going from 44 to 42 million tons.

Regarding the oilseed, Copati, in dialogue with Télam, explained that “66% of the planted area maintains a favorable water scenario to achieve a historical average yield, but, on the other side, we have 34% that is in a situation of lack of humidity”.

Of this 34%, almost 30% corresponds to a regular condition that “does not significantly compromise the performance potential and that, depending on the forecasts for the coming days, could improve in these frames.”

Thus, the specialist specified that “what is interesting is that although there is a surface with a drought condition, there is very little area that is affected by this extreme scenario. Most have chances not to compensate, but to stop the deterioration.”

The area planted with soybeans and corn that is facing problems of water deficit reaches 8.4 million hectares.

Regarding corn, highlighted that 24% of the implanted surface is in a state between regular and drought, this last state being only 1% of the total.

As he remarked, the most affected areas are the north, south and center-east of Entre Ríos.

In general terms, this means that this year we may have yield losses and end the cycle with productivities below historical averages in important areas in these regions”, he expressed. Despite this scenario, the projection of 51 million tons can be realized, he said.

Report of the Ministry of Agriculture

On the other hand, during the week it was known a work carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) and the National Meteorological Service (SMN), among other organisms, in which designed a “drought map” and estimates were made regarding the affected area.

Depending on the job, there are 1.9 million hectares of crops at risk, of which 700,560 correspond to first class soybeans; 508,152 to second class soybeans; 694,851 to corn; and 12,851 to sunflower.

On the livestock sidethe report underlined that there are 14.7 million cattle in danger.

The report detailed that “Drought conditions severely worsened during Januarymainly in the northeast of the country”, since “the combination of unusual lack of rain and record temperatures generated an extreme situation in provinces such as Corrientes, Misiones, North of Entre Ríos and east of Chaco and Formosa”.

In fact, the joint work asserts that The NEA region is currently experiencing a “severe drought” with “intense effects on crops, livestock, citrus, horticulture, beekeeping and artisanal fishing.”

The situation in Corrientes

In this region, the province most affected, not only by the drought, but also by the fires, is Corrientes, where, according to the latest INTA report, 785,000 hectares have already been consumed by the flames, at a rate of 30,000 hectares per day, while the economic losses, according to preliminary calculations by the Association of Rural Societies of Corrientes (ASRC), would reach $27,000 million. .

About, the president of the ASCR, Pablo Sánchez, told Télam that these days “the situation has not changed, but is getting worse day by day. What we are going through is a natural disaster, it is a catastrophe.”

According to the rural leader, “The province is going to need extraordinary aid according to the extraordinary situation” and at the same time he thanked the solidarity of society, firefighters and brigade members from other provinces who help contain the fires in Corrientes territory.

Regarding the forecasts for the next few daysthe director of the INTA Natural Resources Research Center, Pablo Mercuri, projected that as of Tuesday there could be variable rains in “different areas of the center and north of the country, with the most abundant in the NEA expected to occur as of Thursday 24”.

Although he maintained that “these rains would serve to alleviate the fire situation that affects Corrientes and Formosa”, the phenomenon of La Niña will continue, therefore the rains will also be below historical averages.
