Political prisoner Nidia Barbosa remains hospitalized for heart problems

“They don’t let me see her and she’s in the ICU,” claims the daughter of a political prisoner, Nidia Barbosa

“They don’t let me see her” claims the daughter of the political prisoner Nidia Barbosa, who since noon this Thursday has been hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Japan-Nicaragua Friendship Hospital. Her daughter has no information about her mother’s health status, who during the six months she has been in prison, has been admitted to the hospital four times, but on this fourth occasion, it is the first time she was taken to the ICU, and “it is worrying,” he says.

“The door is closed – to the ICU – and the prison guards are there,” says her daughter, who for the second consecutive day was not allowed to see her mother. “The deputy director of the prison came out and said that I do not have authorization to visit and I tell him: I want to know about my mother’s state of health, she turned around and left,” said the young woman, who requested that her name be kept in booking.

Barbosa’s daughter explained that she found out about her mother’s health situation from third parties, and not through the Prison, which is responsible for the custody of the political prisoner, who suffers from asymptomatic sinus bradycardia -alteration of heart rate- .

Since May 17, the last time she was able to see her mother during the visit, she “felt bad”, she felt throbbing in her heart, but she was receiving medical attention, says her daughter. “She was being treated by the doctor, very kind to her. My mother does not receive any mistreatment, but they do not let me see her, ”she pointed out.

The 66-year-old prisoner of conscience and member of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy (ACJD), was sentenced in February to eleven years in prison for the alleged crimes of “conspiracy to undermine” and “propagation of false news”. ”.

Barbosa was arrested in Masaya on November 6, as part of the hunt that the Ortega regime unleashed against opponents on the eve of the 2021 general elections, which lacked legitimacy and allowed Daniel Ortega to stay in power for the fourth consecutive term. , and the second, with his wife, Rosario Murillo, as vice president.

Since her capture, the area of conscience has presented medical problems. In November, the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy reported that the political and opposition prisoner had been admitted to a hospital in Masaya, with problems of hypertension and heart disease. She also had musculoskeletal and joint involvement.

Alert for the health of Barbosa

The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights denounced that “the director of the Granada Penitentiary System, Ermel Fernández, assured that he has orders not to let anyone, not even his daughter, enter to see her and not to give information about his state of health.” “You have to see her mother, it’s her right,” the Cenidh demands. However, this Friday they did not give him any type of access or data either.

“Where is the medical authority? Are hospitals an extension of prisons?” questioned Cenidh. “We demand that the medical union of the Japan hospital respect its Hippocratic oath, they have to inform their daughter of the true health conditions of her mother,” they exhorted through their Twitter account.

The human rights organization recalled that it is the responsibility of the State “guarantee the life of the inmates in their custody, they must also provide the family with all the necessary information about the health of their relatives.” After the death of the retired general and political prisoner, Hugo Torres, on February 12, the relatives of prisoners of conscience have warned that the lives of their relatives are in danger in the prisons of the Ortega regime, especially the elderly, for those who requested house for jail.

However, this measure has only been applied to captive prisoners in the Directorate of Judicial Assistance, El Chipote, and at the discretion of the regime.
