HAVANA, Cuba. – Political prisoner Ediolvis Marín Mora was subjected to physical abuse and threats for requesting religious assistance in the provincial prison of Camagüey, Kilo 8, according to what he himself reported by telephone last Saturday.
According to the political prisoner, on Wednesday, February 4, a Catholic priest appeared at the prison, who requested authorization to provide religious assistance to Marín Mora and the activist Jorge Luis Caballero. However, according to what he said, the new director of the prison, Major Leonardo Suárez Rey, did not approve the visit.
In addition to this, Marín Mora continued to denounce, both prisoners were handcuffed and taken to a cubicle in the life sentence area, where they were stripped naked and searched.
According to the protester, the soldiers left them both in the cubicle for “a few hours.” Marín Mora also emphasized that throughout that time they were kept handcuffed.
The political prisoner denounced in the same way that the prison director asked him if he “made complaints.” When he did not respond, he said, a State Security agent who called himself “Ramón” told him in a threatening tone: “You are going to know who we are.”
The protester also stressed that he is a practicing Catholic and has requested religious assistance on several occasions, always with negative results. In this sense, he emphasized, the Camagüey prison authorities have not even allowed him to have a Bible with him.
Ediolvis Marín Mora, 39 years old, is a resident of the La Gloria neighborhood, in Nuevitas. He was arrested after a raid on his home on September 6, 2022 for participating in the peaceful protests that occurred on August 18 and 19 of that year, motivated by the incessant and prolonged electricity outages in that city in the province of Camagüey. At the time of his incarceration he worked as a self-employed worker in a private concrete company.
Marín Mora also indicated that he was initially held captive for 31 days in the cells of the State Security of Camagüey, in the Garrido neighborhood. He was then transferred to the Cerámica Roja prison, where he remained for more than two years and three months awaiting trial.
The political prisoner He was sentenced to 13 years in prison. for the crimes of sabotage and sedition. The trial against him was held on January 16 and 17, 2024 in the Popular Provincial Court of Camagüey. He was transferred to the Camagüey Provincial Prison on January 7, 2025.
