They deny a statutory visit to a 11J prisoner suffering from cancer

GUANTANAMO, Cuba. — Authorities of the Kilo 5 and a half prison in the province of Pinar del Río suspended the statutory family visit corresponding to the month of August to the political prisoner and protester of July 11, 2021 (11J) Alexander Diaz Rodriguez.

Moraima Rodríguez Batista, aunt of the prisoner and national coordinator of the organization of the Union for Free Cuba Party (PUNCLI), declared to CubaNet that was presented last Tuesday in the kilo 5 and a half prison on the occasion of the corresponding family visit. The prison authorities informed him that they would not allow Alexander visits and, without offering further details, told him that the political prisoner knew what he had done.

Juan Luis Bravo Rodríguez, coordinator of the PUNCLI and manager of the Emilia Project in Guantanamo, assured this outlet that Alexander was taken to a disciplinary council in July, where they suspended two regulatory visits as a measure for having launched anti-government leaflets in detachment 1 and for demanding medical assistance.

The 11 J protester also left leaflets in the first days of August in the corridor of the infirmary demanding that they give him his family visit corresponding to the month of August alleging that due to his illness he needed the cleaning and food that his Aunt Moraima.

Alexander Díaz Rodríguez is one of those sanctioned for demonstrating on 11J in the province of Artemisa. He was sentenced to six years in prison for the crimes of contempt and attack.

In March 2021, he was diagnosed with throat cancer after leaving a hunger strike in the Guanajay prison, where he demanded medical assistance and better living conditions for the inmates.

After being diagnosed, he was transferred to the special prison of Kilo 5 and a half. There, thanks to the claims of his family, he has been taken to the medical post on several occasions.

Díaz Rodríguez is a member of PUNCLI and manager of the Emilia project. Currently, he is interned in the medical post of the aforementioned prison. In addition, he was diagnosed with dengue on August 2.

This Thursday, a state security officer appeared at the home of Moraima Rodríguez, who lives in the Havana neighborhood of Calabazar. The agent threatened Alexander’s aunt with suspending prison visits if she posted anything on social media regarding the situation her nephew is suffering from.
