CDMX, Mexico.- The 17-year-old Leidy Bacallao was murdered by her ex-partner at the police station of her community, the Camalote Popular Council, located in the Nuevitas municipality, Camagüey province. As Cubanet was able to confirm with a family friend, she requested anonymity.
This, as far as is known, is the third femicide this month in Cuba.
The young woman was at a party last night where her ex-partner was found, and there he threatened her. Frightened, the girl ran to the police station seeking protection and in front of several officers, her victimizer attacked her. Then one of the officers pulled her gun out of her and shot him in the back.
The attacker responds to the name of Elesban Hidalgo, according to various reports on social networks.
“It was very hard to see her like this, with her belly open and turning off in the hospital. He gave her two machete blows, one on her left arm and the other on her abdomen. She barely lived an hour after that man assaulted her. He is still breathing, but serious,” says the source who spoke with Cubanet.
Several residents have denounced that the perpetrator had a history of violence, and had even assaulted other women before. However, our outlet could not independently confirm it.
“I was very young and had my whole life ahead of me. She was waiting for a claim from her father to go to the United States. I still can’t assimilate that they did this to her”, says the family friend, who also adds that the outside of the station in Camalote, Camagüey, continues to be stained with Leidy’s blood.
For her part, user Norys Cancino wrote in a Camalote Facebook group. “Sad news for all of us who know the family. There are no words to comfort these parents and other family members. Justice is required.”
A friend of her parents confirmed to Cubanet that the young woman had a relationship with her attacker, a man in his late 50s, since she was 14 years old. Despite the fact that her parents did not approve and she was a minor, the authorities did nothing to push him away.
Also in Camaguey, has transcended the disappearance of a Cuban driver and the murder of another citizen. In the case of the second, it is Yudel López Álvarez who was reported missing on February 1 and who was later found lifeless. Meanwhile, Guperto Rafael Cánovas Adán, has been missing since yesterday Friday morning. The old man works as a taxi driver and was rented by a woman and two men.
another femicide
Leidy has become the third woman murdered this month in Cuba.
In the first week of January, the Gender Observatory (OGAT) of the feminist magazine AlasTensas confirmed 3. 4 femicide that occurred in Cuba throughout 2022.
According to the magazine and its observatory, the provinces with the highest number of cases were Havana, with eight femicides; and Camagüey and Matanzas, with five each.
“Carrying out a complete record of the deaths of women due to sexist violence entails numerous difficulties and risks, because the island’s regime has been in charge of criminalizing all kinds of political activism, and also inhibits any possible citizen complaint,” lamented Alas Tensas, one of the three independent platforms that, along with YoSíTeCreo in Cuba and the Women’s Network of Cuba, counts sexist crimes on the Island.
