Three political prisoners were beaten, isolated and threatened by fS unctionariesWaswalí Regional Penitentiary System, Matagalpa, after they participated in a hunger strike in rejection of the cruel and inhuman treatment of those who are victims in that prison.
CONFIDENTIAL learned that the political prisoners Emiliano Zeledón, and the brothers Dorling and Oliver Montenegro are some of the victims of the beatings inflicted by prison officials.
In the case of Zeledón, according to the sources consulted by CONFIDENTIAL, received “a severe beating that even made him defecate blood for several days. They isolated him and denied him medical attention.”
“They told them to stop shitting, in reference to the strike, that if they didn’t they would disappear, a clear death threat, or they would be transferred to Chipote,” the source explained.
In addition, he indicated that the prisoners of conscience managed to report the attacks until this week because they were “isolated, in punishment cells.”
“Other detainees helped them filter the complaint. Everyone is concerned about the constant violations of their rights, but they sent word that they will resist whatever they have to resist”, he stressed.
The Blue and White Monitoring denounced the situation of Zeledón and the other Waswalí political prisoners and demanded “immediate freedom and respect for their physical integrity.” Likewise, the Blue and White National Unit (UNAB) pointed out that Emiliado’s health “is at risk” and demanded “urgent medical attention” for him and the other prisoners of conscience.
“We demand the cessation of threats and mistreatment of all political prisoners,” UNAB highlighted through its social networks.

Emiliano Zeledón Valdivia, 43, is from San José de Bocay, Jinotega, and has been incarcerated since April 2020, convicted of allegedly committing crimes related to drug trafficking. Community leaders from Jinotega have stated, on condition of anonymity, that Zeledón is a peasant who was only imprisoned by the regime for being a family member of dissidents.
Political prisoner Manuel Urbina Lara “was transferred in retaliation”
The political prisoner Manuel Urbina Lara, who announced the indefinite hunger strike through audio, was also the victim of reprisals from the Waswalí Prison officials, the source said.
Urbina Lara denounced, at the beginning of the hunger strike, that political prisoners are victims of limitations in access to drinking water, reduction of food and restrictions on recreation and hours of patio sun.
The family of Urbina Lara, on April 29, denounced that Waswalí officials denied them the visit they had scheduled with the prisoner of conscience.
The Nicaraguan Center for Human Rights of Nicaragua (Cenidh) denounced the disappearance of Urbina Lara, after it became known that prison officials took him from his cell to an unknown destination. On May 4, the relatives of Urbina Lara learned that the political prisoner had been transferred to the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System, known as La Modelo.
The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), in December 2021, granted precautionary measures in favor of José Manuel Urbina Lara, after considering that he is in a serious and urgent situation of risk of irreparable damage to his rights in Nicaragua.
Urbina Lara was condemned to four years in prison, in March 2021, for the crime of reckless homicide, after getting involved in a traffic accident in which a person died, after the Prosecutor’s Office accused him and prevented him and the family of the victim of the accident come to mediation.
