The National Union of Press Workers reported this Friday a new case of arbitrary detention in Venezuela: journalist Pedro Urribarri, 30 years old and graduate of the Santa María University, who has been deprived of liberty for eight months without his trial providing clear evidence to support the charges he faces.
The young man was arrested on May 21, 2025, days before the regional elections, and after several prison relocations. They took him to the Yare II prison, in the state of Miranda.
Urribarri, who worked in advertising and marketing, is accused of alleged crimes of conspiracy and incitement to hatred, accusations that until now have not been proven in the judicial process.
“Pedro is a young journalist of 30 years old, appreciated by his friends and family. He was dedicated to advertising and marketing and They linked him to alleged actions to sabotage the elections. None of these accusations have been proven in court,” the union said in X.
In this case, the SNTP indicates that A total of six journalists and communicators remain detained in the country for the exercise of the press or accusations without verifiable support. On the list are: Jonathan Carrillo, Deivis Correa, Marifel Guzmán, Rory Branker, Juan Alvarado and Juan Pablo Guanipa.
Relatives of political prisoners have indicated that they did not report arrests or disappearances due to fear of retaliation. The beginning of the release process in January has brought to light new cases of detentions that remained hidden or were publicly unknown.
