Speaking to Article 66, Nicaraguan activist Rommel López, president of the organization Nicaragua Nueva Generación, pointed out that recently in the cell where Ortega’s prisoner is being held, the jailers of “La Modelo” let in “a large group of common prisoners with high criminal records.” dangerousness, so he fears for his life.

He added that the threats, intimidation and harassment against Ramos Galo extended to other political hostages, who have denounced on various occasions the “irregularities that happen in the prison on a daily basis and the violent treatment that includes torture and punishment of physical abuse.”
He also asserted that the 68-year-old opposition member has suffered two attempts on his life in prison, for which reason international and human rights organizations are urged to “take action on the matter and resolve the situation of the political prisoners in Nicaragua.
“The situation of political prisoners in Nicaragua is worsening by the minute and it is known to all international organizations (…) that those deprived of liberty for political reasons suffer torture, mistreatment, and emotional abuse,” said Rommel López.
The political activist concluded that “it is necessary to act and not let these people —the political prisoners— perish, rather that they have hope of obtaining their freedom, since giving a different opinion to a government is not a crime, but being punished for having a different opinion is against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
