Mexico City, Mexico. – This Thursday, the Cuban Yuneisi Santana denounced that her husband, the political prisoner and 11J protester Samuel Pupo, had received a beating at the hands of the prison authorities in the Agüica prison, where he is detained. “I was informed by the relatives of two prisoners, who are being held with Samuel and witnessed the events,” the young woman denounced in conversation with CubaNet.
Through the mediation of Pupo’s companions, Santana learned that he had been attacked when they were taking him to the visiting area. Félix Navarro, a former Black Spring prisoner of conscience and currently in prison for protesting 11J, was one of those who reported that the second chief of the Order, surnamed Ferrer, and another soldier had violated Pupo.
“My husband cannot walk properly due to his condition, and he is also full of pimples that have become infected in prison because he is diabetic and does not heal like an ordinary person. Perhaps it was the fact that he walked very slowly that bothered his jailers, and why they pushed and hit him in front of the others. Although I am not clear, ”said her partner to this medium.
While Pupo was attacked inside the facility, Santana and their 13-year-old son were outside the center waiting to be admitted, as they had a scheduled visit. However, there they were told that it was not up to them. They then asked him to leave the sack of food and leave. Arriving at her house, the woman received notice about what had really happened to her husband.
Samuel Pupo was sentenced to three years in prison because during the protests in Cárdenas he got into an overturned car and shouted “Down with communism! Homeland and Life!”, very close to the headquarters of the Municipal Party. Despite his multiple illnesses, which have worsened in prison, he was denied the change of measure to an open regimen.
The inmate suffers from scleroderma, a degenerative disease that turns his own immune system into an enemy. His body mistakenly attacks healthy tissues and there is no cure for it. There are two types of scleroderma, one is localized, which only affects the skin. The most serious is systemic sclerosis, which damages blood circulation and organs, and is what Pupo suffers from. For this reason he walked with difficulty. Even in times of crisis he cannot move because the uniqueness of his illness is that his body hardens like stone.
Despite its condition, medical care in the prison has been very poor, according to declared his wife to CubaNet. They do not even supply him with all the medications he requires and do not allow him to visit the doctor as often as his condition demands.
Santana, for her part, has publicly denounced all the violations against her husband, which has come at a cost: she was not accepted into the job at the school where she taught for years, because she is not “reliable.” In addition, they have threatened to withdraw custody of their son for “affecting the normal development of the minor.”
