Havana Cuba. – From the town of Entronque de Herradura, belonging to the Consolación del Sur municipality, in Pinar del Río, the opponent, activist and political ex-prisoner of the group of 75 Eduardo Díaz Fleitas denounces the lack of transportation and medical supplies in the health facilities in the area.
Through a telephone conversation, the activist, who is also director of the Alianza Democrática Pinareña, recounted that on Sunday, December 11, around 8:00 p.m., he went to the Entronque de Herradura polyclinic, specifically to the extended medical post, an entity in charge of providing 24-hour health services to a total of approximately 10,000 inhabitants of the town and surrounding areas.
Díaz Fleitas clarified that he went to the place to receive a prescribed aerosol treatment because he recently suffered from dengue. However, upon arriving at the facility he found that he had no nebulizer for treatment. On the other hand, members of the staff of that health center revealed to the activist that a few hours before another patient who had arrived with an asthma attack had to be sent to the head of the municipality, since in that instance they did not have the means to give her attention.
The opponent also criticized “the total defenselessness” in which the inhabitants of the area find themselves due to the little or no availability of ambulances or any other transport, so that in the event of any emergency those affected have no other alternative than to try to resolve the situation by their own means. He also emphasized that this type of incident is additionally complicated on Sundays, since they are days in which it is generally difficult to find a driver who is willing to work, especially when the journey to the provincial capital is 12 kilometers.
Díaz Fleitas also pointed out that not a few patients have to travel long distances on foot to reach that medical post, in many cases to find that there is no necessary equipment to care for them. To this is added, he indicated, that the current weather conditions lead to an increase in cases of asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions.
The activist from Pinar del Río deplored the critical situation to which citizens not only of Entronque de Herradura, but also of other towns in the country are exposed, as well as the fact that Cuban officials and leaders are not interested in resolving this and other problems that affect the population.
