Veracruz, Ver., Cañeros belonging to the September 9 Organization demonstrated and they took booths in the southern part of the state to demand a subsidy of 300 pesos per ton of sugar cane and other support from the federal government to the countryside.
The farmers arrived at the checkpoints of the El Caracol and Papaloapan bridges and the Cosamaloapan-La Tinaja highway, where they allowed vehicles to pass without paying tolls, in exchange for economic “cooperation.”
Jorge Alberto López Luna, one of the protesters, pointed out that they do not have a guaranteed price for their harvest, in addition to the fact that the harvest is close and there is great uncertainty in the sector.
“We are forgotten in the countryside, and dissatisfied with the issue of cost; we do not have a sustainable price, we have no guarantee. The government has forgotten us,” he reproached.
The sugarcane growers said that it is urgent that the entry of sugar from other countries be completely stopped, since they consider that these imports seriously affect them.
They indicated that their leaders are seeking dialogue with federal authorities to reach agreements.
Meanwhile, sugarcane growers members of the Democratic Sugarcane Unit, who since 5 a.m. yesterday maintained a blockade on the outskirts of Sader, agreed to a meeting with Undersecretary Leonel Cota Montaño to negotiate their request list, which includes the creation of an emerging rescue plan for the sugar sector.
