They create a support group for music student Abel Lescay

MADRID, Spain.- This week students, graduates and professors of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) have created the Facebook group “#FreeAbelLescay movement”, in support of the young Abel Lescay, sentenced to 6 years in prison for having participated in the anti-government demonstrations of July 11, 2021 in Cuba.

From the page, which already has more than 200 followers, its organizers and members demand “the withdrawal of all charges against Lescay” and demand “justice and civility.”

ISA’s second-year Acting student and promoter of the group’s creation, Christian Jesús, explained to Cuban Journal that since they announced the first call people were willing.

Regarding the consequences and the repression that the regime may unleash, he stated: “In life you have to take risks and we are going to put our chests in it.”

Abel Lescay, a music student, had been tried on last january 26 in the People’s Provincial Court of the province of Mayabeque. Condemned recently sentenced to six years in prison, he initially faced a seven-year sentence for the crimes of public disorder, aggravated contempt of a continuing nature and contempt of the basic figure of a continuing nature.

Shortly after leaving the Court on the day of the trial, police officers appeared at the session as witnesses who proved that he had offended them on July 11.

“It is something that I had already accepted publicly and I also accepted it there. Before they arrived, I said that I had offended them and, really, I feel sorry for having done it and I even apologized to the chief of police and asked him to pass it on to the other officers,” the musician said at the time. .

After knowing the sentence, his mother, Isel María Lescay Oliva, asked a general amnesty for all political prisoners of 11J.

“This goes beyond my pain as a mother, beyond my selfishness as a mother who tries to save her offspring at all costs and the others to save themselves as they can. (…) This is because I do not conceive of another way to undo so much wrong, to correct so much nonsense and such disproportion, other than promoting a GENERAL AMNESTY for all those who demonstrated on July 11, ”she said.
