Yesterday, Mexico, the countries of Central America and the Dominican Republic created a regional plan to eradicate the screwworm, which caused the temporary closure of the United States border to imports of Mexican livestock since November 22 after a case was detected in Catazajá , Chiapas.

Gathered in the International Regional Committee for Agricultural Health (Cirsa), whose presidency pro tempore Mexico holds, the nations announced that the project is based on five pillars: livestock movement control, epidemiological surveillance, treatment of fresh wounds, sterile fly dispersal, as well as training and health education.

We face challenges that know no borders. The eradication of the cattle screwworm is a priority to protect our rural economies, ensure animal health and guarantee the human right to foodcommented the Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development of Mexico, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, when inaugurating the 91st extraordinary meeting of Cirsa, in Palenque, Chiapas.

The actions will be monitored by the Executive Directorate of the International Regional Organization for Agricultural Health, whose governing body is Cirsa, and the health agencies of each of the countries that comprise it.
