The overflow recorded on the morning of this Tuesday, September 13, at the Gatun locks was attended to and controlled by the Canal’s technical team, with which traffic through the inter-oceanic waterway was restored two hours after the incident.
According to the Panama Canal administration, these incidents are rare. Similar events have been recorded in the past, such as the one that occurred in 1972 in Gatun, which caused the complete closure of both lanes for about eight hours.
They recalled that in 2016 an overflow was reported on the gates of the Miraflores locks that was attended to immediately.
They assured that thanks to the specialized team of the Panama Canal, these mishaps are controlled effectively and in a short time, guaranteeing effective navigation and the safe transit of ships through the interoceanic waterway, as has been done since its inauguration, on 15 August 1914.
