A total of 132 kilograms of Caribbean spiny lobster were seized by the National Aeronaval Service, in conjunction with the National Customs Authority (ANA), at the Marcos A. Gelabert International Airport.
According to Major Jorge Martínez, head of the Regional Center for Air and Naval Operations of Panama, the seizure occurred after verifying an aircraft from Mansucum, San Blas in the Guna Yala Region, managing to detect the sea products that are closed.
Martínez pointed out that the merchandise was located in seven boxes and two packages and that they coordinated with the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority for the confiscation.
He indicated that the closed period for the Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) fishery, under the fishing methods (nasa-diver), is in force from March 1, 2023 to June 30, 2023.
He added that depending on the condition of the seized product, the authorities make donations to homes or put them back on the market for sale. As for the owner of the product, he said that a monetary penalty will be applied for failing to comply with the closed period.
