They condemn propaganda use of political prisoners, after Rodríguez's presence in Zone 7

The Committee clarified that Mrs. María Malavé, who appeared in Zone 7 hugging and speaking with Jorge Rodríguez, is not a relative of any political prisoner nor is she part of the family members organized in vigil.

The Committee of Relatives for the Freedom of Political Prisoners (Clippve) rejected the instrumentalization of the victims’ pain and “propaganda strategies to project a false image of humanity.”

Through a statement, the Committee ruled on the presence of a lady who wore a Clippve shirt and arrived this Friday the 6th at the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Police, known as Zone 7, at the time that Jorge Rodríguez also made an appearance, along with Jorge Arreaza and the representative Grecia Colmenares, to promise the release of the political prisoners no later than next Friday.

The moment in which the woman effusively hugged Rodríguez caught the attention of the relatives who have been awake for 29 days and assured that they had not seen her before.

The Committee clarified that the woman is not a relative of any political prisoner nor is she part of the family members organized in vigil.

«This person previously presented himself at the camp located in El Rodeo I, for 29 days, with the name of María Malavé (62), where he claimed to be politically active, without providing a verifiable account of an alleged arrest. At first, and out of solidarity, he received humanitarian support. Subsequently, she expressly indicated that she did not have any family members detained and, after being identified as a member of the community and a supporter of the ruling party, she left without returning,” the Committee explained in a statement posted on social networks.

The organization condemned “the use of pain, symbols of faith and spaces of hope for propaganda purposes” and demanded respect for all victims.

On January 8, the president of the National Assembly announced the release of a “significant number” of political prisoners. However, according to records kept by human rights organizations, less than 400 people have been released from prison since that date.

This Friday, Rodríguez surprised with a visit to the relatives of the political prisoners in Zone 7 to inform them in person that once the amnesty law being discussed by the National Assembly is approved, they would all be released no later than next Friday the 13th.

It is the first time that Rodríguez or another official approaches the detention centers to talk with the relatives.

The bill was approved in the first discussion on Thursday the 5th. Human rights organizations, lawyers and political organizations have asked for an in-depth debate on its content as they warn errors and background gaps in the text. However, Rodríguez asks for speed in its approval.

*Journalism in Venezuela is carried out in a hostile environment for the press with dozens of legal instruments in place to punish the word, especially the laws “against hate”, “against fascism” and “against the blockade.” This content was written taking into consideration the threats and limits that, consequently, have been imposed on the dissemination of information from within the country.
