MIAMI, United States. – The political prisoner Dariel Ruiz García, a protester in the town of Aguacate in August 2021, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison to make a lesson to other people who have left to the streets to protest and demand freedomas reported by his brother, Janiel Ruiz García.
In an interview with CubaNet, Janiel addressed the people who justify the fact that many Cubans are still in prison because, supposedly, they were violent or stole; and he denied that his brother had protested violently. “There is the evidence, there are the videos, there are the witnesses, that this protest as well [como empezó] concluded [pacíficamente]”.
“When they put electricity in the town, everyone went home. My brother is arrested in front of his house. [Los policías] They ask him for an identity card, he gives it to them and they take him prisoner, August 17, 2021, “said Janiel.
The interviewee assures that the Cuban authorities did not take into account what really happened in the Aguacate protest. “They took into account the testimonies of the Police. They asked my brother for nine years in prison. They accused him of public disorder, contempt, incitement to commit a crime and resistance”, he specified.
“It is clear that it was taken to give a lesson. They sentence him to give a lesson, ”he insisted.
Janiel also denounced that the Cuban authorities have fabricated criminal cases against peaceful protesters, including her brother. “They say he resisted, but the witnesses who were there, who were at the trial, deny it.”
“He, frustrated like many people, went out into the street to say what he thought, without attacking anyone, without stealing anything from anyone. If they say that he continues to be imprisoned because he was violent, it is a lie”.
“They asked him for nine years in prison, they inflated all the charges to the maximum. In the trial they had no way to prove it and they ended up giving him two and a half years,” Janiel said.
However, his brother has also been denied the benefits that correspond to him due to the time that has elapsed since his entry into prison and his behavior. “They did not approve the reduction [de condena] (…). The order is that no political prisoner can be released until they [el régimen] have no benefit”, he ends.
