They compare genetic samples with DNA of the two disappeared in the Amazon

The Federal Police (PF) of Brazil found this Friday (06.10.2022) organic material, apparently human, in the river through which a British journalist and a Brazilian indigenist who had disappeared since last Sunday were traveling in a remote place in the Amazon.

British journalist Dom Phillips, a contributor to The Guardian newspaper, and Brazilian indigenist Bruno Araújo Pereira have been missing since Sunday morning in the Valle do Javari, a remote and jungle region in the Brazilian Amazon, where they were conducting research to write a book. .

According to a statement from the Crisis Management Committee, created to coordinate the search and investigations, the teams “located in the river, near the port of Atalaia do Norte, apparently human organic material that is being sent for expert analysis by the Institute National Criminalist”.

That body, belonging to the Federal Police (PF), also analyzes the “samples” collected from the “blood traces found on the boat of Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, 41 years old and known as “Pelado”, whose temporary prison was decreed by the Justice yesterday (Thursday)”.

Alias Pelado, the only suspect arrested and from whom weapons, ammunition and illegal drugs were seized, was seen on Sunday in a boat behind the boat of the disappeared, who were heading by river to the municipality of Atalaia do Norte.

They collect genetic remains of the disappeared

According to the committee, this Friday “reference genetic materials were collected” from the British journalist, in Salvador de Bahia, and from the Brazilian indigenista, in Recife (Pernambuco), cities where they resided.

The materials collected “will be used in the comparative analysis with the blood found on the (suspect’s) boat,” said the committee, which hopes to “clarify the facts so that the return, as soon as possible, of Messrs. Bruno Pereira Araújo and Dom Phillips with his loved ones.”

Araújo, a deep connoisseur of the isolated indigenous peoples in the Amazon, had already denounced threats against his life by illegal loggers and miners and drug traffickers who exercise control in the area.

The lack of concrete news about the disappeared daily increases the pressure of international organizations on the Brazilian government, accused of having a late reaction to the case.

Amnesty International (AI), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and other national and foreign entities criticized the delay in the mobilization by the authorities.
