Santo Domingo.- Commemorating the 187th anniversary of the birth of Eugenio María de Hostosthis January 11, the Dominican Association of Teachers (ADP) ratifies the commitment of the national teaching profession to keep its historical legacy alive.
For your extraordinary contributions, Hostos He is considered the father of modern education in the Dominican Republic. Our people are so grateful for his work that his remains rest in the National Pantheon, for the pride and glory of all Dominicans.
The ideals of Eugenio María de Hostos They are as valid today as in the century in which they lived, and they continue to be confronted by the same conservative sectors as always.
The ADP It incorporates in its Declaration of Principles the adherence to the Hostonian philosophy and, in addition, defends its incorporation into the purposes of Dominican education, established in the General Education Law.
Although the General Dominican Education Law no. 66-97 establishes the formation of free, critical and creative citizens, promoting a democratic, fair and supportive society, with a strong national identity, awareness of rights and duties, gender equality and capacity for productive development and the enjoyment of culture and science, guaranteeing quality education for all. There are political, religious and business sectors, as well as foreign groups and corporations, that try to leave these values and visions of Hostos out of our education.
The reforms that are intended to be imposed on the Law 66-97including the merger of MINERD and MESCYT, basically seek to extract Hostos’ ideas from Dominican education. These sectors fear Hostos like the devil fears the cross.
Our union will continue, above all, to promote this innovative thinking as a way to overcome the current and historical deficits of Dominican education. For this reason, we assume the call, together with the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo and the Hostosian League, of the XXI National Hostosian Congress, to be held on the 11th, 12th and 13th of this month, of which this floral offering constitutes the first activity.
Long live the unity of the Antillean and Latin American peoples, as Hostos proclaimed it!
