In the manifesto read by Onofre Rojas, a member of the Political Directorate of FP, he states that: “The Gesta Gloriosa de Constanza, Maimón and Estero Hondo was an expedition made up of 198 men, Dominicans in exile and a group of foreigners, which constituted the greatest challenge that had been made in its entire history to the Trujillo tyranny, which was already approaching 30 years.
As many social actors and historians have said, without a doubt, June 14, 1959 marked the beginning of the end of the State of terror, humiliation and plunder to which said regime had subjected Dominican society.”
He points out that most of the militants who confronted the regime were destined for prison, death or exile, so that a good part of those who managed to survive had to set sail for foreign beaches “and from there they organized the resistance and made the decision , after the attempt of the Cayo Confites expedition in 1947, to return to the homeland with the aim of establishing a democratic regime, of economic prosperity for all and guaranteeing fundamental political and social rights”, says the document.
It establishes that the purposes of the expeditionaries are clearly contained in the Minimum Program of the Dominican Liberation Movement (MLD), which were condensed into four major aspects: political, social, economic and international.
The manifesto maintains that although the expedition of June 14 did not achieve its immediate military objectives, since almost all the expeditionaries sacrificed their lives for freedom, nevertheless, as subsequent events show, “it was an extraordinary political fact that shook the regime, which committed one of the most horrendous crimes, such as the murder of the Mirabal Sisters, accelerating the execution of the tyrant by the heroes of May 30».
«With the consequent fall of the regime, the holding of national elections overwhelmingly won by Professor Juan Bosch, who promoted the Constitution of 1963, which included in the most advanced way possible all the political, institutional, social and economic objectives proposed by the MLD in its Minimum Program”, adds the piece.
