There are just a few days left to meet the next president of the Uruguayans, a body that has already overcome the debate (?) established by law No. 19,827 with a mandatory nature among those candidates for the Presidency of the Republic who have not achieved an absolute majority. required by paragraph 9 of article 77 of the Constitution of the Republic, they must appear in a second electoral instance.
On this occasion, the vote is for a formula and while the official candidate shows off a supposed coalition majority, the Frente-Amplista leader is not only assured of the flow of Frente-Amplista votes in the first round, but far from losing will, he is adding adhesions. They come from all over… and they want a canary as President.
The campaign was long if we take into consideration the internal one, but short and intense due to the sensations that are leaving shortly after the end of the electoral cycle. There is not much enthusiasm among people and the parity scenario also generates a degree of uncertainty regarding the forecasts.
However, all polls give the Broad Front candidate as the favorite, with the exception of leaving the result open and within the margins of error. Nobody is gambling on a kind of strategy – which has been reiterated lately – of positive weighting for the ruling party, taking it to the ceiling of its projections and the opposition to their floor. Generating that feeling of uncertainty with an open stage, which for the Frente Amplistas is an additional incentive to redouble their efforts until the last minute.
Liquefied debate
The format chosen for the instance in which both contenders faced each other face to face was not the most attractive or the most effective. If anyone thinks that after that staging some undecided person defined their vote, I think they are wrong. What’s more, I think that the audience for that debate was not exactly the hard core of undecided people, who were surely part of another, much more entertaining audience.
Stating, for example, that homicides are declining is – in addition to being false – a rude thing that falls apart in the face of reality. The one that President Lacalle Pou appeals to to refer to the issue, repeating the same falsehood the next day of the debate as if it were a mantra. No matter how much they repeat the same thing a thousand times, the raw and hard data show that this five-year period (with two years of pandemic in favor) is already a record for homicides and without counting the dubious deaths that grew scandalously and do not enter the statistics.
The exaggerated preachings against the Frente-Amplista administrations diverted Delgado from the main purpose of the debate, subtracting time and space for his proposals. The belligerent attitude of one and the conciliatory attitude of the other were very clear images that remained of a liquefied debate that was very unattractive to citizens.
Votes in flight
Elections are won with votes, and in this second round those votes are worth double when they come from other stores. Therefore, each vote that the Frente-Amplista formula adds from other ranks has an immeasurable value that will weigh in the definition. While the Multicolor Coalition will lose will in this second instance, the Frente Amplio – faithful to its most recent history in runoffs – will expand its voting in the first round, which paves the way for it to obtain the first presidential seat.
Of course there is nothing won, votes are needed and for that it is necessary to convince and bring together those who were not in the first round, but are willing to give a chance to the change proposed by a government where honesty is a sign of preference .
Elections are the main milestone of a democracy where the sovereign expresses himself through voting. A gauge that measures and evaluates the management of a government, approving or removing it from the exercise of power. That is the maximum expression of democracy, where the sovereign qualifies the management, and renews or changes.
This coming November 24th we will have the opportunity to elect the president, the leader to whom we will give the enormous responsibility of directing public policies for the next five years. The people already elected their representatives in October, now they choose the head of government and with him who will lead the teams that will have the responsibility of fulfilling what was promised.
The adhesions to the candidacy of Yamandú and Carolina have been added in this short month of the second round. Thus, despite it to some, the batllistas are giving their support to Orsi in an undisguised way. There are many examples that came from the north and that have been replicated throughout the country. News also comes from nationalist ranks with the support of militants who have decided to support the Yamandú-Carolina formula in the second round, without regard or half measures. They will be joined by lobbyists, independents and ordinary voters who want a change of direction for the country.
They come from all over and want to bring Orsi to the Presidency of the Republic.
