Santo Domingo.- A little more than 2.2 million plastic bottles were collected this Sunday as part of an initiative by the Mayor’s Office of the Dominican capital, which compensated the thousands of people who delivered bottles with toys.
According to the Mayor of the National District, more than 5,000 relatives attended the event, known as Plastics for Toys, which this year reached its third edition with the aim of promoting care for the environment and recycling.
Entire families gathered the night before at the Municipal Palace, despite the fact that the activity was scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time this Sunday (1:00 p.m. GMT).
“It gives us immense satisfaction that children and parents make this collection and that we can fulfill so many purposes,” said the mayor, Carolina Mejía, when intervening in the activity, considered the main environmental awareness in the country.
The important thing, he pointed out, “is that we understand that plastics have a value and we can give them a new life cycle.”
This year the collected bottles will be delivered to the Botellas de Amor Foundation, specialized in the construction of street furniture with recycled plastic and which will make children’s games for the city parks.
