They claim the Nicaraguan Army for “caring more for the cows than for the indigenous peoples”

The environmental defender Amaru Ruiz denounces that the Nicaraguan Army has not yet ruled on the recent massacres and armed invasions perpetrated by settlers into indigenous territories of the Autonomous Region of the North Caribbean Coast that caused the death of women and children belonging to the area.

“The Army cares more for the cows than for the indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, it has not even ruled on the massacre in Wilu located in the core area of Bosawas, the Beco (Ecological Battalion) for what it serves if they do not protect the reserve”, the Nicaraguan biologist rejected, attaching the statement from the military entity where they celebrate the “occupation of livestock and equines” to five citizens.

According to complaints from indigenous organizations, on March 10, armed settlers attacked “in cold blood” the inhabitants of the Wilú indigenous community, in the Mayangna Sauni As territory. “A person who fled the place reported the death of five community members and The number of dead women and children is unknown, although he assures that there are several,” alerted the Center for Legal Assistance to Indigenous Peoples.

The teams from the Sauni As Ranger organization also received information about burned houses. “It is a community that is the victim of these armed attacks and, now, it is the second time. The entire population of Sauni As is on alert asking for help,” they denounced on their social networks.

Calpi reported that prior to the attack, on Friday March 10, three Mayangna community members and two children who were members of the Mískitu indigenous people were kidnapped by non-indigenous settlers, when the victims were heading from Musawás to the Betlehem community in the Mayangna Sauni As territory, in the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve.

Given this, the indigenous organization called on the Nicaraguan regime and local authorities to “stop so much violence against indigenous communities, to disarm those who organize this type of action and urgently carry out cleanup.”

Recently, Calpi also reported a “third bloody incident” in the Bosawás Biosphere Reserve. Community members found settlers in the indigenous plots, who, when they asked them to leave the place, were attacked by the invaders.

According to the report, three Mayagna people were injured, including a woman. One of the victims was rushed to the Bonanza hospital after being shot in the chest.

Recently, Ruiz expressed that there is a lack of political will to address the situation of invasion of the territories “and evidently this situation has led to impunity for other murders and that the settlers have understood that they can do what they want without any repercussions.” .

He also indicated that these crimes have occurred within protected areas, this being the responsibility of the Nicaraguan Army through the Ecological Battalion, “and how is it possible that gangs operate there knowing that it is a militarized zone, but the institutional authorities do not act to safeguard neither the biosphere reserve nor the indigenous communities”, questioned the expert.
