Councilman Manuel ‘Mamén’ Saavedra and residents of neighborhoods surrounding the Barrio Lindo Fair demand that Mayor Jhonny Fernández make the current regulations prevail and order the public space, which every Wednesday and Saturday, is taken over by the merchants called “mañaneros”.

“In the end, the residents had to play the role of the municipal government to bring order and they ended up in a confrontation, that’s what we’ve come to, so that citizens are the ones who have to go out to seek compliance with the law and order the city. That is a shame for the mayor”, said Saavedra, in time to refer to the acts of violence registered this Wednesday morning between morning workers and residents of the area.

What’s more, Saavedra reminded the mayor that in the previous administration the Executive also “prioritized sectors and leaders and look how we are. What the mayor does is return the favor at the cost of the city becoming disordered and public areas being invaded, the city turning into a giant market and the mayor’s office looks the other way because there is a good business in the sale and rental of public space”, stated the opposition councilor.

For his part, Juan Carlos Nina, representing the residents of the Barrio Lindo Fair, assured that he had sent requests and letters to the Mayor’s Office to be in charge of putting order; however, they did not receive a timely response.

“We know that they profit from public space and it is not possible. We have been enduring the traffic chaos caused by the settlement of these merchants on the road and in the mall for years,” said Nina.

He added that a few days ago they learned about the request made by the merchants to install a Christmas fair in the area, more specifically from December 10 to January 5. “If on a regular fair day vehicular traffic is chaotic, I don’t want to imagine what it would be like at a Christmas fair,” rframed

Saavedra reinforced this version and revealed that to date, there is no known end-of-year plan where markets are ordered and traffic is regulated, given the large influx of people that increases by the dates.

“Complicated months are coming at the end of the year and there is no plan, we are going backwards and getting worse as a city. The mayor must present immediate actions and exercise the municipal government based on the citizens and not political allies”, the legislator emphasized.
